Hi Ian - You are a lot closer now, hopefully it will be available within the next 9 months or sooner.

ALISO VIEJO, Calif., April 26, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Avanir Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (AVNR) today announced that the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has adopted a positive opinion for NUEDEXTA® (dextromethorphan hydrobromide and quinidine sulfate), recommending NUEDEXTA be approved for the treatment of pseudobulbar affect (PBA), irrespective of neurologic cause. In addition, the CHMP also recommended approval of two dose strengths of NUEDEXTA; 20/10 mg and 30/10 mg capsules.

I have followed the progress of Nuedexta in the USA for 8 years, rest assured all that could be done was done by Avanir to obtain a positive CHMP recommendation. It should be rubber stamped by the EC within 67 days of the above date.
For your information Nuedexta is currently undergoing clinical trials for further indications.

Very best regards.

I think tthis is wonderful news and very much overdue. If something which has demonstrated efficacy in the lab and safety in phase 1 could be made available to patients willing to sign disclaimers that would be a major breakthrough. If it has proved safe then a patient may ultimately be disappointed but at least gets a chance to treat the illness possibly 2 to 3 years sooner than might otherwise be the case which could well, with mnd, prove to be the difference between life and death.

[...] Dr Johnathan Cooper-Knock (Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience, UK) is already trying to identify how C9orf72 causes MND by utilising a genetic technique known as gene expression profiling. He is using samples from the Association’s DNA bank which are positive for the C9orf72 genetic mistake. Gene expression profiling is a technique which allows researchers to understand how the activity of genes contributes towards causing MND. (Traditional genetic studies are designed to look at which genes are affected, rather than their activity – ie when and how). Read more about Johnathan’s project here. [...]
